When Should You Have Your Brakes Checked?

The braking system is a critical safety system in your vehicle. For this reason, it’s essential to have it inspected regularly to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. But when exactly is the right time for a brake system inspection?

Regular Maintenance: A Must for Your Safety

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend having the braking system inspected once a year or every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometers (roughly 9,300 to 18,600 miles). This inspection is part of routine maintenance and should not be neglected.

“Regular maintenance is the key to avoiding costly repairs and ensuring optimal braking performance,” says Dr.-Ing. Markus Schmidt, a renowned automotive expert from Berlin. “Even small defects in the braking system can have a significant impact on safety.”

Warning Signs You Should Take Seriously

Beyond regular maintenance, there are some warning signs that could indicate problems with your braking system.

  • Unusual Noises While Braking: Squealing, grinding, or clicking sounds can indicate worn brake pads, discs (or rotors), or other defects.
  • Brake Pedal Vibration: A pulsating or vibrating brake pedal can be a sign of warped brake discs (or rotors).
  • Increased Stopping Distance: If you feel your vehicle is taking longer to come to a complete stop, you should have the braking system inspected immediately.
  • Reduced Braking Effectiveness: If your braking power seems diminished, or if the brake pedal can be pushed all the way to the floor, this indicates a serious problem that requires immediate attention.
