Getting ready to tow? Whether new or used, your trailer needs to pass the German TÜV inspection. This guide covers everything you need to know about the “TÜV Hänger,” from what’s inspected to how to prepare.
What is the TÜV Hänger?
The “TÜV Hänger” is essentially the main inspection (Hauptuntersuchung or HU) for your trailer. Like your car, trailers undergo regular checks to ensure roadworthiness, environmental compliance, and adherence to regulations.
When Do I Need a TÜV Hänger Inspection?
Newly registered trailers typically require their first inspection after three years. Subsequent inspections are required every two years.
Tip: The next HU date is in your vehicle registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) under “TÜV” and in the previous inspection report.
What is Inspected During the TÜV Hänger?
TÜV inspectors thoroughly examine the following:
- Vehicle Identification: Does the chassis number match the paperwork?
- Braking System: Are the service, parking, and overrun brakes functioning correctly?
- Lighting: Are all lights working and properly adjusted?
- Tires and Wheels: Are there damages to tires or rims? Is the tread depth sufficient?
- Chassis and Body: Is there rust or damage to the frame? Are the sidewalls stable?
- Trailer Hitch: Is the hitch intact and approved for the towing vehicle?
Expert Tip from Michael Schmidt, Master Mechanic from Berlin: “Pay particular attention to the condition of the tires and the braking system. These two areas frequently lead to issues during the TÜV Hänger inspection.”
