What to Expect in the Truck Practical Test

“The examiners want to see if you can safely and responsibly operate the vehicle in traffic,” explains driving instructor Markus Schmidt from Berlin. “It’s not about being perfect, but about mastering the basic driving skills and correctly assessing hazardous situations.”

The test is usually divided into two parts:

Basic Driving Maneuvers

Here you have to show that you have your truck under control. You will be asked to perform various maneuvers in a practice area, such as:

  • Hill Start: This demonstrates your ability to coordinate the clutch and accelerator.
  • Reversing: Precision is required! Parallel parking or maneuvering around corners takes practice.
  • Turning Around: In tight road conditions, it’s important to turn the truck safely and quickly.

Road Driving Test

In the second part, you go out onto the road! Here you must show that you can drive your vehicle safely and confidently in real traffic situations. The examiner will give you instructions on which roads to follow. They will pay particular attention to:

  • Adherence to Traffic Rules: Traffic lights, right-of-way rules, speed limits – you can’t afford any slip-ups here!
  • Lane Changes and Overtaking: Show the examiner that you maintain awareness and overtake safely.
  • Turning and Intersections: This requires proactive driving and proper lane positioning.

Tips for a Successful Truck Practical Test

“Good preparation is key,” emphasizes driving school owner Petra Huber. “Besides driving lessons, it’s important to practice independently and mentally prepare for the test.”

Here are some tips that can help you:

  • Practice Makes Perfect: The more you sit behind the wheel, the more confident you will become. Use every opportunity to drive, even outside of driving lessons.
  • Error Analysis: Discuss your weaknesses with your driving instructor and work on them specifically.
  • Test Simulation: Ask your driving instructor to simulate a test situation with you. This way, you’ll get a feel for the actual test scenario.
  • Stay Calm: Take a deep breath and try to remain calm and focused.
  • Ask Questions: If you don’t understand something, don’t hesitate to ask the examiner.

Common Mistakes in the Truck Practical Test

Of course, it can happen that you get nervous during the test and make mistakes. But don’t worry, not every mistake leads to immediate failure. It’s important to keep calm and not let small slip-ups rattle you.

Here are some of the most common mistakes made during the truck practical test:

  • Stalling the Engine: Especially when starting on a hill, it’s easy to stall the engine.
  • Mistakes When Reversing: Precise maneuvering takes practice. Therefore, practice reversing and parking particularly intensely.
  • Driving Too Closely: Always maintain sufficient distance from the vehicle in front to be able to brake in time in case of an emergency.
  • Disregarding Right-of-Way: At intersections and entrances, always pay attention to right-of-way rules.
  • Incorrect Lane Positioning: Think ahead about which lane you need to use and position yourself in time.
